Plantain leaves contain iridoid glucosides, flavonoids (luteolin), mucilage, tannins, pectins, salicylic acid, mineral salts. The presence of these active ingredients gives the plant bechic, expectorant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, astringent properties. The anti-inflammatory action of plantain is due to aucubin, which by hydrolysis releases a bicyclic genin called aucubigenin.
